Pancake Tuesday

- Posted on: 16/02/2021 -

Shrove Tuesday

Pancake Tuesday originated from ‘Shrove Tuesday’. It is the day before Ash Wednesday which is the start of lent. It is called ‘Shrove Tuesday’ because the word ‘Shrove’ is linked to the word ‘Shrive’ which means to ‘absolve’.

Pancakes

In the past, families would prepare to fast for lent by using up all the ingredients they had in their house. This would usually be eggs, milk and flour, so they would make pancakes.

Lent

Christians traditionally fast for these days and usually give up certain foods or things they enjoy like chocolate, crisps and sweets for the 40 days before Easter. This time represents the days Jesus spent in the dessert resisting the temptation of satan. Lent was taken very serious and Irish families would usually only eat one meal a day.

Pancake Tuesday is celebrated all over Ireland and the UK, it’s even celebrated in South America but it is called Mardi Gras – 'Fat Tuesday'!
